Synthesis and Characterization of Carbon Nanotube (CNT)/Polybenzimidazole (PBI) Nanocomposites |

Polybenzimidazole (PBI) is a polymer with extremely high thermal stability and high chemical resistance. It can be spun a fiber with excellent textile and tactile performance. Due to its exceptional thermal and chemical stability, it is often used by fire departments and space agencies. In this study, we are investigated the in-situ polymerization of high performance polybenzimidazole (PBI) from AB monomer 3,4-diamino benzoic acid hydrochloride in the presence of fixed amount (10 wt%) of carbon nanotube (CNT) such as multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) or single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) in viscous polyphosphoric acid (PPA) medium. The monomer contains hydrochloric acid and it requires dehydrochlorination process generating hydrochloric acid gases during the exchange reaction between PPA and ammonium hydrochloric acid salts. The CNT/PBI nanocomposites films were able to cast from methanesulfonic acid (MSA) solution. |
