This paper describes (1) first, the successful polymerization of acryloyl b-alanine (ABA) or acryloyl phenylalanine (APA) via ATRP under near physiological conditions using various water soluble initiators with high yield and narrow molecular weight distributions. Controlled polymerization of amino acid-based monomers is important as a tool for synthesis of tailored polymers and copolymers for biomaterials and medical applications. Second, (2) block copolymerization of ABA/APA with temperature sensitive monomer, n-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) via ATRP under environmentally friendly conditions. Their lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) were determined by cloud point measurements over a range of pH environments. 1H NMR spectroscopy, static light scattering, and gel permeation chromatography were used to determine polymer molecular weight and polydispersities. |
