For the growth of marine microalgae, trace elements such as Fe, Co, Cu and Mn are essential. Especially iron is an essential trace element for fundamental processes. Manganese is also necessary in the cellular metabolism. Dunaliella tertiolecta was grown under light intensity of 80 μE/m2/s1 and bubbled with air containing 2% CO2. The basic medium contains three-fold concentrated N and P. The growth patterns were classified into three types according to growth rate and physiological response. The first type with a high growth rate was composed of basic medium with trace metals (positive control) including Fe and Mn. The second type consists of basic medium with Fe and Mn respectively. The third type includes two medium conditions which basic medium with only trace metals and basic medium (negative control). The differences of cellular response under each trace metal ion conditions demonstrate that natural seawater medium should contain Fe and Mn ions for growth of the microalgae. |
