Preparation and characterization of pH-responsive and superparamagnetic alginate/activated carbon/poly(vinyl alcohol)/γ-Fe2O3 microcapsules |

The alginate microcapsules containing vitamin B12-loaded coconut-based activated carbon (AC) were prepared as a pH-responsive delivery system in order to improve the sustained release of vitamin B12, a model drug. The alginate/AC microcapsules were modified to contain the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) particles to impart the superparamagnetic property for the targeting delivery. The morphology of microcapsules was characterized by SEM, TEM and optical microscope. The components of microcapsules were examined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The size and size distribution of microcapsules were measured by dynamic laser light scattering system (DLLS). The magnetic characterization of microcapsules was carried out by magnetometer. Thermal stabilities of micrcapsules were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Alginate/AC/PVA/γ- Fe2O3 microcapsules exhibited both superparamagnetic and pH-responsive release properties. |
