Electro-optical characteristics of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-styrene)/liquid crystal microcapsules |

Highly monodispersed methyl methacrylate-styrene copolymer(Poly(MMA-co-St))/liquid crystal (LC) microcapsules were fabricated by dispersion polymerization and solute co-diffusion method(SCM). The mononuclear and mono-sized LC domains were observed in overall polymer/LC microcapsules. In our previous work, some distortion of LC domain and unstable polymer matrix were shown in the display device cell using PMMA/LC microcapsules. To overcome these problems, we introduced Poly(MMA-co-St) seed particles for the LC microencapsulation. The copolymerization of MMA with St was influenced on the stabilization of LC domain and polymer matrix. Morphological characteristics of microcapsules were monitored by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The monodispersity of LC domains in the microcapsules was confirmed by a polarized optical microscope. Electro-optical properties were measured by using He-Ne laser. |
