Nanostructured ruthenium oxide (RuO2) nanoparticles were synthesized using double-hydrophilic block copolymer as a template. Specifically, polyethylene oxide-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PEO-b-PAA) was employed to form a micelle upon addition of the ruthenium precursor, which then transform into RuO2 nanoparticles of controlled dimension. The average diameter of RuO2 was easily controlled with varying ratio of metal precursor to block copolymer in the range of ca. 1 5 nm. The synthesized RuO2 nanoparticles are very stable for several months. Furthermore, we have demonstrated its utility in the application of supercapacitor. Through the annealing at 400 oC, we found the surrounding block copolymer turns into graphitic carbon layers atop of RuO2 nanoparticles, which contribute to the enhancement of the overall specific capacitance significantly. We envision that the double hydrophilic block copolymer will provide a facile and general tool in creating functional nanostructures. |
