Control of biofilm formation using underwater discharge |

The biofouling in a water purification system has been a major issue for the application of filtration. In general, it is caused by the attachment and growth of microorganisms on a filter surface. Therefore, it is very important to suppress the biofouling in water treatment by filtration. We investigated the suppression of biofouling on the filter by making use of an underwater capillary discharge. In this study, we used a polypropylene (PP) with immobilized sulfone functional group as a filter and set up the underwater discharge before the filter. We investigated the anti-biofouling effects by comparing the water flux of membrane with and without the capillary discharge. The water flux of filtration system with the capillary discharge was enhanced as much as 1.8 times, compared with that without the discharge. |
