Radiation Modified Starch Derivative for Use as Metal Sorbent |

Present work describes the synthesis, characterization and metal chelation property of the modified starch from aqueous medium. Modification of the starch was carried out by irradiation of carboxymethyl starch (CMS) using electron beam radiation at various doses and concentration. Synthesized hydrogel was characterized for gel content and swelling behavior. Structure of the resin was determined using analytical instruments like SEM, X-ray (SAX) and FTIR. Modified starch resin was evaluated for the sorption of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) ions from aqueous solutions. Various physical parameters like pH, metal ion concentration, adsorption time and the dose of sorbent were considered during evaluation of the sorption property. |
