제목 | Synthesis and characterization of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers as proton exchange membrane for fuel cells |
초록 | As a new power source for transportations, stationary applications and portable power applications, polymer membrane electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) systems have good potential. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) plays a key role in this technology. Sulfonated perfluorocopolymers such as Nafion and Flemion have been recognized as the best materials due to their high proton conductivity and excellent chemical stability. However, these copolymers have some disadvantages in high cost, reduced conductivity at high temperature, and high methanol permeability. Aromatic condensation polymers containing sulfonic acid moieties are considered as possible candidates for the alternatives materials for PEM because their backbone structures are generally heat and solvent resistant with good mechanical properties and their cost are relatively cheap. Investigation for such polymers based on poly(arylene ether keton)s, poly(p-phenylene)s, 6-membered ring polyimides, polybenzimidazoles, etc. have been reported so far. In this study, we will present the synthesis and characterization of poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers containing sulfonic acid groups on the polymer backbone by potassium carbonate mediated direct polycondensation of sulfonated and unsulfonated dihalides with aromatic diols. The basic properties of the sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s for proton exchange membrane fuel cell will be discussed. |
