제목 Preparation and Characterization of Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) Nanocomposite with a Newly Designed Organoclay
초록 Many studies on polymer/clay nanocomposites have demonstrated that incorporation of clay into polymer matrix can result in significant improvements in stiffness, strength, thermal stability, gas barrier properties and fire retardance. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a low-cost, high performance polymer that used in a wide variety of applications such as fibers, food and beverage packaging and engineering plastics. Incorporation of clay into PET can have a significant impact on such applications, potentially imparting higher fire retardance, decreasing gas permeability, and increasing modulus. In this study, PET/organoclay nanocomposite is prepared by melt blending of PET and newly designed organoclay. The organoclay is obtained by cation exchange reaction of Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and newly synthesized organic modifier that possesses functional groups that can react with PET and phosphonium group as a cationic group. In X-ray diffraction pattern, intercalation of the organic modifier into silicate layers of Na-MMT is observed. In addition, an exfoliation of silicate layers into PET matrix is confirmed by XRD and TEM. DMTA measurement shows that storage modulus of PET/organoclay nanocomposite is higher than that of PET.
