Silica filled tires can have notable performance over carbon black filled tires, lower heat buildup, improved resistance to chipping/chunking and has a lower rolling resistance. In spite of these performances, carbon black is still the particulate filler of choice due to its high reinforcing effect. Poor polymer-filler adhesion, lowering reinforcing effect, is the major constraint on using silica. We have attempted to use graphite coated silica in tire formulations, so that the polymer-filler adhesion can be improved resulting better reinforcing effect. Silica particles were coated with expanded graphite by two steps. Successful grafting of graphite on silica particles were characterized using standard characterization tools. Modified silica particles were then incorporated in SBR at various filler loadings. Significant improvement in mechanical properties was observed for graphite modified silica filled SBR. |
