Effect of electrical stimulation on Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) induced paw edema in arthritis rats |

We focused on the healing of paw edema, a tissue that inflammation is induced by CFA, which has been largely unexplored in the context of electrical stimulation. In addition, we found that electrical stimulation had no cytotoxic effect on the NIH-3T3, as demonstrated by the comparable cell viability under both conditions. The right hind paw of male SD rats were injected with 150 μl CFA. The size of the edema increased rapidly from day 1 to day 3, suggesting that many inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) significantly increased on the paw edema induced by CFA. After confirming the inflammatory response by CFA, we applied electrical stimulation to the legs on the 3 days of maximal size of the paw edema and found that paw edema decreased more rapidly compared with the control. Furthermore, histological examination revealed no signs of toxicity during the electrical stimulation. |
