Effectof silica nanoparticle size and immobilization methods on super- hydrophobicity of fabrics |

The wettability of solid surfaces is an important property of materials that is controlled by the chemical composition and/or geometry of the surfaces. The effect of surface roughness obtained by inorganic nanoparticle coating on the hydrophobicity of fabrics were investigated. Silica nanoparticles with various size were successfully prepared through sol-gel technique via the hydrolysis and polymerization of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) with NH3 as a catalyst. SEM observations revealed that the nanoparticles have a narrow diameter distribution. In order to immobilization of the nanopartcles on the natural or mam-made fabrics, commercial emulsion or suspension of perfluoro polymers or polyurethane. As the commercial aqueous media have been used as water-repellent finish of the fabrics, it is anticipated to enhance hydrophobicity of the fabrics by synergy effect of physico-chemical low surface energy and nano-structural hydrophobicity. |
