Alkyl polyglycosides are obtaining increasing importance because of their interesting surfactant properties at the same time their good biological degradability. Alkyl polyglycoside butyl ethers combine good cleaning performance with only a slight tendency to foam. Alkyl polyglycoside were prepared by reacting glucose and alcohols having 8 to 10 carbon atoms. Alkyl polyglycoside butyl ethers were synthesized by reacting alkyl glucosides and butyl chloride by base catalysis in the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide solvent. The structure of the products were identified by TLC, IR, NMR, Mass spetroscopy. Surface properies such as surface tension, interfacial tension, detergency were mesured.
