helical Structure of Sugar-Carrying Polystyrene in Aqueous Solution by Circular Dichroism |

Radical polymerization of N-p-vinylbenzyl-D-lactonamide (VLA) gave an optically active polymer of helical conformation of single screw-sense. It is thought that the helical structure of poly(N-p-vinylbenzyl-D-lactonamide) (PVLA) was induced from optically active disaccharide units in the side chain, which were covalently linked with polystyrene (PS) through amide linkage, indicating that the aromatic groups were chirally arranged although the original PS was not optically active. The intensity of circular dichroism (CD) for the PVLA decreased with an increase of temperature due to the change in the conformation of the phenyl group or simply due to aggregation-disaggregation. And also the intensity of the CD for the PVLA increased in the mixture of water and alcohol due to the increased hydrophobicity. The intensity of the CD for the maltose-carrying PS(abbreviated as PVMA) was a little higher than that of the CD for the PVLA due to the more hydrophobic property of PVMA than PVLA. |
