Metal adsorability of the chitosan electrospun nanofiber mats were examined in an aqueous solution. The nanofiber mats which were neutralized with potassium carbonate showed good erosion stability in water, and high adsorption affinity for metal ions in an aqueous solution. The adsorption data which were determined by a spectrophotometric method were fitted well with Langmuir isotherm indicating that mono-layer adsorption occurred on the nanofiber mats. The desorption capacities (from Langmuir isotherm data) for Cu(II) and Pb(II) were 419 mg/g (2.46 mmol/g) (one of the highest values for Cu(II) which are ~10 times higher than the reported values for the chitosan microbeads) and 203 mg/g (0.61mmol/g), respectively. This high adsorption capacity suggests that chitosan electrospun nanofiber mats can be applied to a metal-adsorption filter with other original chitosan properties such as biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, bioactivity, non-antigenicity, and non-toxicity. |
