We designed a smart contact lens composed of biosensor, drug delivery system, and power sources for the treatment of diabetes as a model system. For the diagnosis of diabetes, glucose content in tear samples was measured as a non-invasive alternative for the blood glucose monitoring. Biosensor was composed of Au electrode immobilized with glucose oxidase. When glucose binds to glucose oxidase, hydrogen peroxide is produced and oxidized on the electrode generating electrons. From the current, we could measure the amount of glucose in the sample solution. For the drug delivery system, we fabricated Au membrane coated model drug reservoirs, which could release drugs by the triggering electrical current for the electrochemistry of Au to AuCl4- in the saline. Finally, electrical power systems are being developed using photovoltaic, WiTricity, and radiofrequency systems on smart contact lens for the theranostic applications. |
