New Therapies: Drug Discovery or Delivery? |

The transition from an academic discovery to an industrial project is not a simple one. In a University world dominated by impact factors and citation indices, the first hurdle encountered by the potential industrial partner is the urge to publish above all. Thus, without securing proper IP (intellectual property = industrial protection) and thus unavoidably delaying publication, there simply is no possibility to obtain a satisfactory strategic agreement between the academic and the industrial partners. Another frequent misconception is that beautiful science is guaranteed to yield blockbuster sales. However, an exciting cellular target may lead to a niche indication which does not warrant the colossal investment needed to put a new drug on the market. We aim to treat people, and not transfected cells or transgenic animals. This is even more of a problem that most frequent diseases are multifactorial in nature. |
