Coronary artery atherosclerosis and occlusion are leading causes of death. Common treatment of coronary occlusion includes balloon angioplasty (BA) and bare-metal stent (BMS) and/or drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation. Gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid) is a phenolic acid, and is a phytochemical. Gallic acid has anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antimicrobial, and anticancer effects. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of gallic acid on vascular inflammation, smooth muscle cell growth, and delayed arterial healing in a porcine coronary restenosis model. Gallic acid added to coronary stents showed anti-inflammatory effects at 1 month, in a comparison with SES in a porcine coronary restenosis model. Therefore, gallic acid can be a candidate natural compound for coating vascular devices to inhibit inflammation after stenting. |
