Synthesis and Mechanical Strength Properties of Novel Organically Modified Halloysite-Polystyrene Nanocomposites |

Clay nanoparticles show a good dispersion within a polymer for nanocomposite formation, when they have been organically modified prior to the composite preparation. Generally, strong interactions between the polymer and the surface of the clay nanoparticles are advantageous and improve the mechanical properties of the composite. In this work, we have synthesized polymer-clay nanocomposites of unmodified and organically modified aluminosilicate nanotubes with polystyrene through plasma polymerization. The modified halloysite clay nanotubes were found to be well dispersed in the polystyrene-based polymer matrix. The nanocomposites were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, and TGA. The dynamic mechanical properties were analyzed by DMTA. The polymer and the organically modified clay showed a good interaction and enhanced the mechanical properties of the polystyrene, when compared to the unmodified clay material. |
