The conversion of CO2 into fuels and chemicals using renewable electricity is one promising method of increasing the penetration of renewables into the fuels and chemicals industry. CO2 conversion can be performed through the electrochemical process which has several advantages including: fine control of reaction rates/selectivities through the applied potential, wide scalability due to modular system, and excellent coupling to intermittent renewable energy sources due to the fast response time of electrochemical systems. With this process, carbon-neutral electricity sources such as wind and solar can be used to electrochemically reduce CO2 to valuable fuels and chemicals, thus closing the carbon loop and reducing CO2 emissions. In this talk, we will explain the developing electrocatalysts and solar-fuel system for electrochemical CO2 conversion to valued C2 product (ethylene, ethanol) as a raw material of ethylene oxide. |
