The electric-ionic conductivities, biocompatibilities, and other physicochemical properties of conducting materials is crucial research in the neural interface and implantable device field. In this study, we report the nanostructured natural melanin composites with multifunctional properties and electrical conductivities by nanofabrication techniques: the layer-by-layer assembly (LBL) and the depletion attraction force assisted casting method. The melanin composites have shown well-ordered nanostructures and demonstrated the high electrical conductivities as high as 1.17 S/cm, the unique UV-visible light absorption with the structural colors, high electrochemical charge storage capacities, and anti-inflammatory biocompatibility as well as unique edibility by Zophobos Morios larvae. These results show the potential applications of our melanin composite films in the optoelectronic devices, implantable devices, and neural interfaces with unique electrical and biological properties. |
