In moving toward commercialization of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) for stationary and automotive applications, the cost reduction and durability enhancement of membrane electrode assembly are the key challenges. Recently, we succeeded in developing novel membrane electrode assembly which delivers a power density of 1.0W/cm2 at 80oC and at 50% relative humidification. Compared to a commercial product, it exhibits 33% increase in power density even at 30% reduced Pt loading level. In this work, we demonstrate that molecular arrangement of ionic groups in slurry dispersion is highly important in power performance. Also, we provide some examples of how the morphological control of the MEA could enhances durability not losing power performances. |
