Prevention of Bioadsorption Using a Fluoropolymer, Perfluoropolyether |

The fluoropolymer has a low surface energy such that it has both properties of hydrophobicity and oleophobicity. In this study, prevention of biomolecular adsorption was studied on the fluoropolymer modified surfaces. A fluoropolymer, perfluoropolyether (PFPE) was layered on the substrate to passivate against biomolecular and biomimetic particles. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and BSA-decorated latex particles were chosen as model particles and examined their adsorption property onthe PFPE-modified surfaces. Due to the hyrophobicity and oleophobicity of PFPE, both particles were not adsorbed on the modified substrate and easily washed off. Outcomes of this study would contribute to the development of process useful to prevent biofoulingby marine organisms such as barnacles and algae. |
