An atmospheric pressure microwave plasma burner was applied to the decontamination of polluted air with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The plasma burner flame was sustained by injecting liquefied natural gas (LNG, predominatly methane, CH4) into a microwave plasma torch in air discharge. In order to significantly increase the destruction and removal effciency (DRE) of VOCs in the microwave plasma burner, we have developed a reactor of the reverse vortex type by LNG fuel into the microwave plasma torch generated by air. We achieved a DRE of more than 90 % in the VOCs mixture gas of 5-10 m3/min, 10-20 lpm LNG by applying the microwave power of 2 and 2.4 kW and maximum DRE was 98 %. Eventually, the experimental results make the microwave plasma burner with the reverse vortex flows attractive for the decontamination of polluted-air at a high flow rate. |
