We have developed an indirect synthesis of functional polymers with a precise molecular weight and polydispersity control in two sequential steps. First, the controlled radical polymerization of reactive monomers leads to reactive precursor polymers. Second, these reactive polymers can then be functionalized in a polymer analogous reaction. In this regard, polymeric activated esters, especially pentafluorophenyl esters, proved to be remarkably useful as they react fast and quantitatively with amines. They exhibit an excellent solubility in most organic solvents, which offers the intrinsic possibility to analyze the polymers by 19F-NMR spectroscopy. Further, fine-tuning the reactivity of pentafluorophenyl esters resulted in the preparation of orthogonal reactive diblock copolymers. |
