Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/4-hydroxybenzoyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (HB-MWCNT) composites were prepared in various compositions by blending in water. PVA/pristine MWCNT composites were also prepared for comparison. The mechanical property and electrical conductivity of composites were significantly improved with respect to both MWCNT and HB-MWCNT loads. However, the mechanical properties of composites were decreased above critical load amount. It would be due to the reaggregation of MWCNT and HB-MWCNT. In comparison with PVA/MWCNT system, PVA/HB-MWCNT composite displayed better performance. The result must be related to the stronger interaction between supporting PVA matrix and reinforcing HB-MWCNT, because the hydroxyl groups on the surface of HB-MWCNT can form a strong hydrogen bonding with PVA. In addition, the morphological study with x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the correlation. |
