To improve the cell performance of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), it is very important to the employment of high concentrated methanol as a fuel. However, the use of methanol is limited to low concentration because of the methanol cross-over problem. The distintive feature of Pt based electrocatalysts were examined by X-ray diffraction, TEM, several electrochemical analysis and unit cell test. The kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) were investigated using rotating disk electrode(RDE). In the sulfuric acid containing methanol electrolyte, PtPd electrocatalyst showed excellent catalytic activity for ORR compared to Pt electrocatalyst. It is confirmed that better ORR of PtPd is attributed to selective oxygen reductive activity of PtPd in the presence of methanol. In the CO stripping voltammetry, PtPd electrocatalyst has more overpotential of CO oxidation rather than only Pt electrocatalyst. However, PtPd has stronger CO-tolerance due to the low CO coverage. |
