Citronellol, which can be derived from eucalyptus, has antibacterial property against S. aureus. Due to its effective antimicrobial activity, citronellol was chosen as a substance to attribute antibacterial property to polymers. Two kinds of polymers containing citronellol were synthesized. Methacryloyl chloride and citronellol were reacted to make Cit-ma as a monomer, which can be polymerized. Poly(cit-ma) was successfully synthesized and its antibacterial property against S. aureus was relatively high. The other polymer containing citronellol was made by modification of poly(epichlorohydrin). Citronellol and poly(epichlorohydrin) were connected by thioether bond by reacting hydroxyl group of citronellol. Antibacterial polymers were successfully prepared and they can be utilized as antibacterial coating materials. |
