In this study a platform Escherichia coli strain for the productions of short-chain alkanes (gasoline), free fatty acids (FFAs), fatty esters, and fatty alcohols through the fatty acyl-[acyl carrier protein (ACP)] to fatty acid to fatty acyl-CoA pathway was successfully developed. Series of genes were deleted or overexpressed. Consequently, the engineered E. coli strain could produce up to 580.8 mg/L of short chain alkanes.
