Due to anti-fouling property, hydrogels have attracted on much attention in ocean industry field. However conventional hydrogels show poor mechanical properties, so their application has been limited in this field. As a solution of this problem, we suggest the polyampholyte (PA) hydrogels with extremely high strength and toughness. It is thought that the PA gels have the resistance to marine fouling because of their super-hydrophilicity, which is attributed to the zwitterionic property. Additionally the PA gels are eco-friendly because the chemical cross-linkers are not required. The PA gels are synthesized by the radical polymerization of equal amounts of oppositely charged ionic monomers at a very high concentration to form polymer chains in topological entanglement. The PA gels exhibit high modulus and strength. In this study, we try to apply the PA gels as a material for the anti-fouling of marine environment. The mechanical, adhesion, diatom-anti-fouling properties are discussed. |
