Control of nanoporosity in cellulose acetate/ionic liquid composite by water pressure for applications to water-treatment membrane and separator |

New method for generating nanopores in cellulose acetate polymer/ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4) composite was developed utilizing water pressure for applications to water-treatment membrane and separator. The porous cellulose acetate matrix was successfully prepared by both the ionic liquid BMIMBF4 and water pressure treatment. It was found that nanopores in CA polymer were generated when the CA/ionic liquid composite was exposed to water pressure. The porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy showed that the pore sizes were ranged from less than 10 nm to over 10 μm, with an average value of 10 nm. Furthermore, it was observed that the pore size was controllable with water-pressure. |
