Securing clean water is one of Grand global challenges. Membrane separation based on reverse osmosis, nanofiltration and even forward osmosis has become a leading technology for desalination, water treatment, and ultrapure water production. Polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membrane has been most commonly used for such separation applications. However, its wide application has been hampered by the lack of control of structure which, in turn, imposes constraint on improving the permselectivity and durability of the membrane. Layer-by-layer assembly technique can open a new avenue toward high performance and long-term durability by tailoring the molecular structures of the membrane at the molecular level. In this talk, several LbL approaches for the fabrication of highly-performing and highly-durable membranes will be introduced with comparison to the conventional fabrication technique. |
