제목 Influence of surface functionalized montmorillonite clay on the properties of polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposites
초록 In this work, polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposites filled with aminosilane functionalized montmorillonite clay have been prepared by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction studies of the PVOH nanocomposites reveal that there is no drastic variation in d-spacing due to intercalation of PVOH between the clay layers. X-ray diffraction and DSC studies corroborate the change in crystallinity of PVOH due to the loading of nanoclay into the system. Loading of silane functionalized montmorillonite clay significantly improves the mechanical properties like tensile strength and elongation at break. Increase in loading of nanoclay further improves the tensile property especially elongation at break upto a certain loading in contrast to pure montmorillonite clay. Thermal degradation studies of polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposites exhibits two transitions that are attributed to the pure and crosslinked PVOH. Dynamic mechanical analysis of the PVOH nanocomposites shows a decrease in tan peak and width that are corresponds to the increase in crystallinity and the development of crystals with similar crystallite sizes.
