BNCT is a binary therapy, which is dependent on the selective deposition of 10-B in the tumor prior to irradiation by slow thermal neutrons. The combination of 10-B and thermal neutron produces 2.4 MeVmol-1 enough to destroy the tumor cells. Carboranes are stable, lipophilic structure which resemble benzene in term of reactivity and bulkiness. Since an carboranyl unit contains ten boron atoms, in theory, carborane-based biomolecules may deliver much higher concentrations of 10-B atoms in cancer cells. |
