Monodisperse polystyrene (PS) particles crosslinked with a polydimethylsiloxane diacrylate (PDMSDA) as a macro-crosslinker were prepared by dispersion copolymerization in butanol. The monomer swelling capacities of PS particles with various molecular weights of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS; Mw=550, 1700, 4000) and the amount of PDMSDA (5, 10, 20wt% based on the styrene) were investigated. PDMSDAs were synthesized with hydroxyl terminated PDMS and acryloyl chloride in triethylamine and tetrahydrofuran and confirmed by utilizing a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and a infrared spectroscope (IR). The morphologies and diameter of PS particles crosslinked with PDMSDA were monitored by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a coulter counter, respectively. Highly monodisperse and smooth surface of PS particles and a large monomer swelling capacity were ascertained even 20wt% of PDMSDA (Mw=4,000) was used. |
