제목 | Nafion/sulfonated silica nano-composite membrane |
초록 | Perfluorosulfonate ionomer membranes such as Nafion, Dow XUS, and Flemion are used for proton exchange membranes in fuel cells owing to their good electrochemical stability, mechanical strength, and high proton conductivity. However, when they are used as a membrane for DMFC, the methanol crossover from anode to cathode is usually significant. In order to overcome the methanol crossover, many approaches have been considered. Among them, the development of polymer membranes, which are less permeable to methanol, was the main focus of the researches. These membranes were shown to be successful in reducing the methanol crossover, however, they either sacrificed the mechanical strength of the native Nafion or decreased the proton conductivity. So, the cell performance was made worse. In this study, the nanosized-fumed silica was modified with propane sulfonic acid and the Nafion/acid funtionalized silica nanocomposite membrane containing the nanosized silica end-capped with sulfonic acid was prepared. The effect of the modified silica on the proton conductivity and the methanol permeability was investigated. |
