The self-healing polyurethane (PU) is recently attracting attention of researchers due to the improved durability. Self-healing chemistries based on the dynamic features of disulfide linkages have been studied to impart crack recovery in polyurethanes for adhesives. Among the various self-healing systems for PUs, disulfide based systems have the advantage of room temperature self-healing for the crack recovery. In this paper, we have investigated the dynamic features of PU elastomers prepared from a prepolymer of poly(tetramethylene ether glycol), poly(sulfide) diol, and 4,4`-methylene bis(phenyl isocyanate) with chain extenders. Dynamic properties of PUs with disulfide linkages were studied employing universal testing machine (UTM), NMR, and FT-IR. It is postulated that the self-healing PU based adhesives imparts the improved fatigue resistance of the assembled parts by the efficient crack healing. |
