Reflectance and Dielectric Constant of Calcite-Glass Composites with Different Glass Matrix |

Optical properties, such as reflectance, refractive index, and transmittance are very important for optical devices. Calcite has low cost, nontoxic, high whiteness, high refractive index and stable over a wide temperature range. Therefore, calcite is one of the most widely using oxide fillers in many industries. However, the optical properties of ceramic-filled composites have not been analyzed. The calcite-glass composites were fabricated with various contents of a calcite and a glass powder, which has different dielectric constants. The reflectance, transmittance and dielectric constant of the composites were determined using UV-visible spectrometer and LCR meter. The reflectance of the composites is increased by adding calcite to the calcite-frit composites. However, the transmittance and the dielectric constant of the composites are decreased with increasing the contents of the calcite. The refractive indices of the calcite powder and the glass powder are related to the reflectance of calcite-glass composites. It is useful to understand the effects of calcite on the reflective properties of the composites mixed with different refractive indexes of glass powders. From our results, it would be possible to design the calcite-glass composite that has the optimal reflectance for the display industry. |
