Recently, porous polymer microspheres have been widely used for many biomedical research areas. Porous microspheres can be generally prepared by salt leaching and gas forming methods, which are often difficult to control the size and pore structure. In this research, we hypothesized that controlled drug delivery could be achieved using porous microspheres for the treatment of pulmonary disease. We fabricated polymer microspheres with the mean diameter of less than 10 m by induction of osmotic phenomenon. We found that the porous microspheres could be substantially deposited into the lung of mice, as the size decreased, and the sustained release of model proteins from the porous microspheres was achieved for two weeks in vitro. |
