Effect of melamine phosphate on the polyesterification of adipic acid with diethylene glycol was investigated using butylchlorotin dihydroxide catalyst at 423 K. The concentration of the catalyst in the reactants was 0.17 mol % based on the total reactants. The initial [OH]/[COOH] molar ratio was 2, so major product was expected polyadipate-diol. The conversion of the synthesizing polyadipate-diol was calculated with the concentration data of adipic acid which was a limiting reactant. Using FT-IR and GC-MS data, we confirmed that the ester group in the reactant-product mixture increased. The polyesterification rate was decreased when melamine phosphate was added to the reactant. It is assumed that the decreasing reaction rate was mainly caused by melamine phosphate, since melamine phosphate has highest density in the reactant-product mixture and hindered even mixing during the reaction. |
