제목 Characterization of polymer blends of sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone)(s-PAES)/ sulfonated poly(aryl ether benzimidazol) (s-PAEBI) for direct methanol fuel cell
초록 A proton exchange membrane (PEM) serves as a solid electrolyte in a fuel cell, separating the anode from the cathode compartments. This membranes used for PEMs have to exhibit high proton conductivities and a good resistance to the high temperature, humid and oxidative environment fo a fuel cell. Today, perfluorinated membranes such as Nafion from DuPont, Flemion from Asahi Glass has been applied because of their high proton conductivity and excellent chemical resistance, however, they has some disadvantages in high cost, reduced conductivity at high temperature, and high methanol permeability in direct membrane fuel cell (DMFC).
For its purpose, ionic crosslinking between acidic and basic polymers would be an effective method to improve of this disadvantages. It was known that the interaction between the polymers takes place by formation of hydrogen bonds and by proton-transfer from the acidic to the basic group. This hydrogen bridges have advantageous properties, for example, which the swelling degree is markedly reduced by the ionic and hydrogen bridge interactions, and the membranes do not become brittle when drying out, which is due to the flexibleness of the ionic and hydrogen bridge interactions.
This paper described the synthesis and characterization of sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone)(s-PAES) as a acidic polymer and poly(aryl ether benzimidazole)(s-PAEBI) as a basic polymer. Moreover, we performed blend of the acidic and basic polymers, which are interacted with a ionic crosslinking, and properties of these resulting acid-base polymer blending as a proton exchange membrane will be discussed.
