Cholesteric Liquid Crystal-Polymer Composite Systems for Display Applications |

The control and stabilization of the helical pitch in the cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC)-polymer composite systems are investigated for display applications. In principle, the ChLC pitch and the resultant color of reflection are varied by the temperature. Introducing polymer to the ChLC, the ChLC pitch corresponding to photo-polymerized temperature is maintained even at different temperature. Controlling the photo-polymerizing processes, the multi-color reflective display in a single-layered structure and the wide band reflection film with a pitch gradient were demonstrated. Also, the mechanism of the pitch variation in the ChLC-polymer composite systems was discussed. |
