Anionic photo-responsive surfactants, N-(azobenzene-4-oxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-N-(alkyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl)aminopropyl sulfonic acid sodium salt (GnAZAS, n = 4, 8, and 12), were synthesized. The wettability of the GnAZAS series was characterized by contact angle measurements on the various substrates. The GnAZAS series were converted to 92.5% of cis form when exposed to UV light, and were reconverted to up to 74% of trans form when exposed to visible light. The contact angle values of the trans-GnAZAS series (n=4, 8, and 12) on the glass slide, which is a hydrophilic substrate, were 34.1°, 17.9°, and 34.2°, respectively, while those of the cis form were 9.8°, 12.3°, and 16.3, respectively. The contact angles of the cis-GnAZAS were re-measured in the same way under visible light irradiation (λ> 450 nm). Then the values were changed to 21.4°, 16.4°, and 19.6°, respectively. Furthermore, the surfactant showed opposite tendency on the PET film because it is a hydrophobic substrate. |
