A cationic gemini surfactant, N,N,N-(azobenzene-4-oxy-2-hydroxypropyl)dimethyl-N’,N’,N’-(dodecyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl)dimethylethylene diammonium methylsulphate (G12AZ0DA) was synthesized andstudied for its wettability by measuring contact angles on the varioussubstrates. The G12AZ0DA was converted to 92.5% of the cis form when exposed to UV light, and was reconverted to 75% of cis form when exposed to visible light. Thecontact angle value of the 0.01% trans-G12AZ0DA on the glass slide, which is ahydrophilic substrate, was 55.6°, while the value of the cis form was 47.1°.Then, the contact angle of the cis form changed to 47.5° under visible lightirradiation (λ>450nm). It is believed that the azobenzene group in the surfactant undergophoto-isomerization under visible light irradiation, resulting in increasingthe hydrophobicity of the surfactant solution. |
