제목 | TPU/Clay Nanocomposites: A Comparative Study of the Properties of Nanocomposites prepared by Solution and In-Situ Processes |
초록 | Nanocomposites have been synthesized from thermoplastic poly(urethane) (TPU) and a montmorillonite based layered silicate clay (Cloisite). Both unmodified and organo-modified (Cloisite-30B) clays have been used for the preparation of the composites. In-situ and solution methods have been employed for the nanocomposite synthesis. The morphology of the nanocomposites prepared by both methods has been compared. TEM photomicrographs reveal that dispersion of unmodified clay in TPU is poor when compared to that of the organo-modified clay and moreover lots of tactoids were seen in the TEM micrographs of the unmodified clay/TPU nanocomposites. WAXS studies show the exfoliated morphology of the nanocomposites up to a clay content of 3%. The intercalated morphology is predominant at a clay content of 5%. TEM demonstrates the co-existence of intercalated and exfoliated morphologies in all the composites. Incorporation of nanoclay enhances the Young’s modulus of TPU while it has a detrimental effect on tensile strength and elongation at break. The thermal stability and dynamic mechanical behavior of the nanocomposites prepared by the solution and in-situ processes have also been reported. References 1. S. S. Ray, M. Okamato, Prog. Polym.
