High Performance Polyethylene-Supported Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membranes with Excellent Mechanical and Chemical Durability |

A polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane is a key material due to its high process efficiency. However, the membrane process is still challenging for mechanically and chemically harsh environments since conventionally used support materials (polysulfone (PSF) or polyethersulfone (PES)) have the relatively low mechanical strength and poor chemical stability. Here, a commercialized porous polyethylene (PE) membrane is employed as a support to fabricate PA RO membranes with excellent mechanical and chemical durability. The fabricated PE-supported PA RO (PE-RO) membrane showed ~30% higher water flux with ~0.4% enhancement in NaCl rejection compared to a commercial membrane. In addition, the PE-RO membrane exhibited excellent mechanical properties and organic solvent resistance, resulting from the excellent mechanical and chemical stability of the PE material. The proposed strategy could expand the application of PA membranes to harsh operating environments |
