Water Retardation by Morphology Control of Sulfonated Poly(αMeSt-IB-αMeSt) Triblock Copolymers |

Sulfonated poly(αMeSt-IB-αMeSt) triblock copolymers were synthesized by sequential living cationic polymerization followed by the reaction with acetyl sulfate for sulfonation of alpha methyl styrene blocks for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell applications. In this study, the water retardation of sulfonated block copolymers membranes were examined as a function of a type of morphology and IEC value. The morphologies of the sulfonated triblock copolymer membranes by SAXS and AFM showed well defined cylinder or lamella structures. Water swollen sulfonated triblock polymers with cylinder structures showed water retardation at 100°C for 120 min, which was probably due to capillary condensation of water vapour into narrow cylinder ionic channels of sulfonated poly(αMeSt) blocks in polyisobutylene domains. |
