Isotopes are chemically very similar in general but exhibit characteristic differences which can be effectively utilized in chemical analysis. In addition, isotopes can show a measurable difference in liquid chromatographic retention. For example, the chromatographic retention contrast of hydrogen and deuterium allowed an excellent separation of polystyrene (PS) comb of an h-PS backbone and d-PS branches. (Anal. Chem. 2011, 83, 4237) Thermodynamic investigation of the isotope effect was carried out using diblock copolymers for understanding the separation mechanism of PS comb. In this work, a series of hPS-b-dPS, in which the length of h-PS is fixed and the length of d-PS is varied, was synthesized and their HPLC retention behavior was investigated at different pore-sized columns as a function of temperature. We found that the excellent separation of the PS comb could be realized at the condition slightly interactive for h-PS but d-PS is separated mainly by size exclusion mechanism. |
