Basic oxygen furnace slag (BOFS) is recognized as one of the process for producing precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) by CO2 sequestration because the BOFS contains significant amount of calcium. This process is a promising carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology using industrial wastes. The pH-swing indirect carbonation method with ammonium based solvents has been studied vigorously in previous research. However, ammonium based solvents limited low calcium extraction efficiency even though they obtained high calcium selectivity and easy way to recovery the solvent compared with acid solvents. To increase calcium extraction efficiency with high selectivity, chelating agents which selectively react with specific metal ions and form the metal-ligand complex were investigated in the present study. Several chelating agents were chosen to be effective solvent for calcium extraction considering activity and solubility. And extraction experiments were conducted for comparison of extraction efficiency of the chelating agent candidates under same experimental conditions. Also, the kinetics of calcium extraction was studied to develop a reactor model based on the experimental data. |
